Quarantine Inspections

Remember Quarantine Matters!!!!!!

Quarantine inspections will be requested by AQIS if certain certificates are either not supplied by the Custom Broker or not to the standard required by AQIS. Quarantine inspections are conducted in 2 typical ways, either a Tailgate or Rural Tailgate.

A Tailgate occurs when AQIS needs to look inside a container to verify whether or not the contents of the container conform with AQIS packaging specifications.

The AQIS officer will look for items such as:

  • Timber Packaging - Bark presence

  • Soil contamination

  • Live insects & or animals.

Rural Tailgates occur when freight is moving from the Sydney Metropolitan area to an interurban/ interstate area. During a rural tailgate inspection, an AQIS officer will be looking at the following things:

  • Soil contamination inside & outside of the container

  • Seed contamination inside & outside of the container

  • Timber packaging

  • Insect Infestation inside & outside of the container

  • Alive/ dead animals

LCL cargo may also be subject to an inspection prior to release for the same observations as a Tailgate.

These checks are carried out to ensure that no overseas diseases or contaminants can enter Australian shores and be passed on to our Primary Producers.
